2012: An Iconic View of London

Iconic London 2012 exhibition

In December 2012, Instagramers London held its second exhibition, Iconic London 2012, at the iconic Old Truman Brewery in the heart of London’s fashionable East End.

Running from 12 to 16 December, 30 active and talented mobile photographers from the London Instagram community were each given space to choose and exhibit six images of London that they each felt best expressed their individual perspective of London during such a momentous year.

The event was sponsored by Photobox, Europe’s leading online photo gift supplier, who provided all our photo printing and mounting requirements for the exhibition.

The event also put on display the finalists and winners of our year-long Iconic London 12.12.12 Instagram contest, with monthly themed images printed and mounted by Photobox, and all on sale in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Instagram has introduced web views for its users, and very similar they look to a Facebook profile page.  No doubt varying views about how Instagram is evolving from the mobile only community it started out as, but as stated in this BBC article, Facebook currently have no plans for users to be able to upload their images from the web.

A word of caution, we have received one report of an account being deleted while using the web view.  We can’t verify the actual cause but can’t ignore that it happened.

But us Instagram addicts knew this already, didn’t we?  Here, Mark Schaefer tells us why.

Our much awaited Iconic London 2012 exhibition event will be happening at the iconic Truman Brewery from 12 to 16 December 2012. You can follow news of the event at @iLondon2012 on Instagram and Twitter. We are also excited to announce that @photoboxuk will be our print partner for the event, providing all our printing and mounting needs for the exhibiting London Instagramers and the 12.12.12 monthly contest finalists. Photobox are Europe’s leading online provider of personalised photo gifts and provide the highest quality products and service. During the event Photobox will be declaring the winner and awarding prizes for Motographer of the Year 2012, their search for the UKs best mobile photographer. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, the first of four themes is Environment and you have until midnight of 7 October 2012 to tag your best images in this category #moty2012. Follow @photoboxuk for more details including some awesome prizes. (Taken with Instagram)

Announcing the Instagram exhibition event of the year - Iconic London 2012!

Instagramers London are delighted to announce our second Instagram photography exhibition event, Iconic London 2012.  The event will take place from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 December 2012 at the iconic Truman Brewery in London’s fashionable Brick Lane area.

Iconic London 2012 is the second exhibition by the group; the first was My World Shared in October 2011, which received high acclaim as being the first of its kind in the UK.  This second event aims to be bigger and better and takes a retrospective look at life in London during 2012, a momentous highlight in the history of our capital city.

Thirty influential London Instagramers will each give their own personal perspective of London during this most exciting of years, in their own unique style, supported by finalists and winners of Instagramers London’s year long Iconic London image challenge.

Supporting the event will be companies who have embraced the new world of mobile photography by offering innovative products and services, and we are delighted to be joined by Europe’s biggest online photo printing service Photobox, who will share our event to announce winners of their biggest photo contest to date, Motographer of the Year 2012!

The guys at Photobox told us:

Welcome to Photobox Motographer of The Year 2012, our quest to find the UK’s finest mobile photographer! As mobile phones evolve, so do their photographic capabilities, and at Photobox we’re always looking to explore the various ways people visually document the world around them. This, therefore, is your opportunity to show us what you can do. Submit your photos on Facebook, Twitter or on Instagram from Thursday 20th September and you could be the Photobox Motographer of The Year 2012.

Look out for further announcements of supporters and features of the Iconic London 2012 event.

Instagram 3.0 – Photo Maps & More

We’ve been working hard on a major update for both Apple and Android devices. We’re excited to announce that today Instagram 3.0 is available to everyone. Download Instagram 3.0 for Apple here or for Android here.

With every major release, we pick a theme – and for this one we’ve focused on the browsing experience. We’ve introduced a new and unique way to browse your photos and others’ photos on a map, which means you’re no longer constrained to browsing through page after page of photos. We’ve also worked hard on updating all the screens in our app to be more visually consistent and polished. You’ll notice new layouts throughout the app that feel fresh, yet familiar. Our engineers have also been hard at work making sure that the browsing experience is as fast as possible. On newer devices, you should notice a marked improvement in speed while browsing. With that, we’ve introduced infinite scrolling in feeds so that you can quickly see more photos while browsing around the app. And finally, we’ve paid special attention to keeping Instagram a safe place. With improved reporting tools, users can now flag both photos and comments for review with ease. We’re very excited by how much has gone into this release – as always, please provide us with feedback as you explore the new features.

Photo Maps

Introducing Photo Maps, a new way to browse photos on Instagram. Your Photo Map appears on your profile and lets you showcase your photos on a map. Also, you’ll be able to see other users’ maps from their profiles as well.

Important: Before your map is visible to the public, you’ll be prompted to review any photos you previously geotagged. Additionally, we’ve made it easy to remove photos from your map at any time, which will remove any associated geo-data but leave the photos intact on your profile. To read more about how Photo Maps work, read more here.

New look for user profiles, the Explore tab, hashtag & location pages

Also, we now display bigger grid photos to make it easier to browse large collections of photos and see them too. You’ll find bigger grid photos on user profiles, the Explore tab, as well as on hashtag and location pages.

New look for the photo upload screen

  • Larger text box for captions: It’s now easier to write and edit longer captions for your photos.
  • Geotag your photos by selecting “Add to Your Photo Map”: Let people know where you took your photo by turning “Add to Your Photo Map” on. By enabling this feature on your photo, you will store your current location with the photo and it will show up on your map. You’ll also have the ability to choose a specific place name (e.g. “South Park Cafe”) to associate with your photo. Learn more in our help center.

Infinite scrolling (automatic “load more”)

Now, when you get to the bottom of a page, we’ll automatically load more photos for you — no need to tap a “load more” button.

Many speed improvements to make the app faster & more responsive

Instagram v3.0 contains many speed and loading optimizations on newer devices.

Users can now report individual comments as abuse or spam

  • To ensure Instagram is a safe and fun place to share your photos, we’ve introduced a way to report comments. Now, just swipe right or tap on a comment and tap the trashcan icon. You can then select “Delete & Report Abuse” to remove the comment and report it in a single action. If you see an abusive or spammy comment on someone else’s photo, you can now easily report it as spam by following the steps above, though you will see a different icon instead of the trash icon. Note: Reporting comments that are not on your own photos is not included in the current Android version, but we do plan to add it in a future release.
  • Flagging a user has been simplified to one choice: “Report for Spam.” To report a user, tap the button at the top right corner of their profile page, then “Report for Spam.” If you’d like to report a user for other reasons, please report the abusive or spammy comments or images.
  • To report a photo, just tap the “…” button below the photo and then “Report Inappropriate.”

Visit the Instagram Help Center to learn more about version 3.0.

Weekend Hashtag Project: #lowdownground

Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes & hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a photo announcing the weekend’s project every Friday.

This weekend’s theme was [#lowdownground](http://www.gramfeed.com/instagram/tags#lowdownground/), which asked participants to capture photographs from the lowest vantage point possible; low down on the ground! Every Monday we feature some of our favorite submissions from the project, but be sure to check out the rest here.
