Founded on 24 March 2011, Instagramers London forms part of the global Instagramers.com network of mobile photography communities using the Instagram app. We plan meetups and organise events, providing the London mobile photography community with opportunities to meet each other and take and share great photographs.

When London Instagramers hit the streets with the Department of Friendliness

On Saturday 4 August 2012 London Instagramers joined forces with the Department of Friendliness and hit the streets of central London to show how friendly London and Londoners can be.  According to surveys London is the second most unfriendly city in the world, only behind Paris!  We wanted to do something to redress that dubious statistic, especially at a time when the eyes of the world are on London during the Olympics.

Armed with a multitude of crazy props and bright yellow balloons, the DOF set about bringing a smile to the faces of tourists and Londoners alike as we weaved our way through some of London’s best known shopping streets.   Thankfully, we were greeted with welcoming smiles!  Our friendly gestures were warmly embraced as we made our way to Piccadilly Circus where we boarded our iconic London favourite, the old Routemaster bus.  Decorated with yellow DOF banners and union flag bunting we set off on our journey around the streets of the capital, stopping off for the obligatory tourist shots of our favourite London sights.  We eventually arrived at our final destination, the fabulously stylish NH Kensington hotel where we were greeted by chilled beer, just the job for thirsty travellers!

After a chance to kick back and post to Instagram some of our best friendly shots, we set about choosing some of our favourite shots ready for the prize giving.  Around 300 amazingly friendly images were posted during the day, and after some difficult choices, we managed to choose some finalists who each received a fantastic Olloclips or Casetagram iPhone cases as prizes.  But our overall winner was a fantastic image of the London eye with one of our yellow DOF balloons gracefully floating skywards, beautifully captured by Louise @londonbird.  She received not only the Olloclip and the Casetagram case, but also a rather nice bottle of bubbly, courtesy of Fallon.

Our memorable day was supported by many generous sponsors, with wonderful prizes and gifts for Instagramers donated by Blurb, Casetagram, Clippykit London, Olloclip, Photobox, Stickygram, Fallon and Desigual.  Our Routemaster bus was provided by ThisBus.com compliments of Fallon, and our evening party was kindly hosted by NH Hoteles with refreshments provided by Tsingtao.  Our grateful thanks to them.

All in all we had an amazing experience and we firmly believe we made London a friendlier place!
